Abstract

This data packages describes a series of laboratory incubation experiments conducted on soils collected from around Australia.The incubation experiments investigated nitrification rates and N2O emissions as affected by nitrogen fertiliser application with and without nitrification inhibitors. A range of nitrification inhibitors were examined. The incubation experiments were conducted at a range of temperatures and across different soil types. The aim of the project is to identify the major driver of nitrification inhibitor performance in Australian agricultural soils.

Methods Info
Step 1:
Description:
Incubation Experiments
Air dried soils, prewetted to just less than 60% WFPS were incubated at a controlled tempertaure for 3 weeks prior to commencement of the experiment. On day 0, fertiliser (ammonium and 15N-nitrate based sources) was applied to the soil with and without a nitrification inhibitor. Nitrous oxide (N2O) was collected from the vials at regular intervals over a 28 day period using a dynamic chamber sampling protocol with vial closure over a 48 hour period. Collected gas samples were analysed by GC. Soil mineral N data was collected at regular intervals over the same time period by destructively sampling samples at each time point and extracted with 2 M KCl. All samples were collected from 4 replicates.Extracted soil samples were analysed for mineral N on a segmented flow analyser.15N gas, mineral N and soil samples were collected at regular intervals and analysed by mass spec.
Instrument(s):
  • Agilent 7890 Gas Chromatograph.
  • Skalar SAN++ Segmented Flow Analyser.
  • Sercon Mass Spectrometer.
